Father's Day

2 days after Father's Day. I know I'm way past the post but I'll pen it down anyway. We decided to start the fun on Saturday itself. So off we trooped to the Airport . Why the Airport? Coz there is loads of room for the children to run around without running into- or so we thought. It was exciting as it was the first time the 5 of us were out !!! without help!!!! ( what a spoilt bunch you may think).

Baby in the stroller and 2 pre-schoolers trudging along with Daddy and Me- Bliss. We grabbed the doughnuts and allowed the children to do what they do best- run around. Nothing really exciting, just the 5 of us hanging out by ourselves. It lasted till the little ones ran themselves out silly and baby became restless.

That night was spent secretly writing cards for Daddy and the 2 Grandpas. I had to remind the children not to spill the beans and I must say, not bad . They kept mum.

The next morning I had to ensure that Daddy was still in bed whilst I prepared his gift, the card and the children. They carried the stuff, got into the room and wished their Daddy who had no idea what hit him. The point of execution was the sweetest ever- The love between a Father and his children. Well, I think we'll do it again next year, and Daddy will still be surprised ...... Happy Father's Day to my Husband!

Guest Post - Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Good evening. Here is this week's Bread Talk!

In this passage, the writer speaks of a concept that is in so many ways a prized commodity these days, especially in our work of student to student relationships, counsellor to client, social work practitioner to practitioner, peer-to-peer relationships and at times even between lovers and friends; the word ‘trust’.
It is easy to look upon our own experiences where we may have been compromised when trusting someone. Or in some cases, we may have compromised someone’s trust. In some cases, well meaning intentions, at times giving rise to unintended results!
However, Solomon is directing us in those moments to place our trust in the Lord. To an extent not worry by trusting in our own understanding, ie our own intelligence or even lack of it... Trusting that His ways are far better than our ways;  trusting in the Lord’s promises that only someone like Jesus could keep.
Trusting that our submission to His voice is paramount as it is written in Psalm 29; and trusting that the people that are at times placed here with us are people we could and should trust, that’s the path we should take. There is no other way.
So today, if God is telling you to trust in someone, do it!
If today, God is asking you to lean not on your own understanding, do it!
If today, He is asking you to submit to Him, do it!
And, He will make your paths straight….

Guest Post - Trinity Sunday

Hi All,

I'm back from a short hiatus. Have been a bust busy bee over the past week with children falling ill, getting injured and of course interrupted by a major holiday and long weekend in Singapore. I thought it would be appropriate in the season of Pentecost to have a Guest Post on Trinity Sunday. So here goes.....( sorry I'm a day late in posting )

Bread Talk 27 May2013
Yesterday we celebrated Trinity Sunday – the Sunday just after Pentecost to recognize the Godhead three-in-one, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. It is a mystery yet one which is clear that it is one God we serve in essence but in 3 distinct persons.
In Genesis 1, it states that, in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. When the earth was formless, the Spirit of God was moving upon the face of the waters. In John 1, it states that in the beginning, the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word as we would come to know is Jesus! The mystery of the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit began even before all else began…
What a wonderful story to share with people and friends! That we have one God but 3 persons with distinct personalities. 3 different ways they have touched mankind and changed their stories…
Eg, when we go on a holiday do we usually go to a city or do we go to a place where we can see nature….When we see nature, do we say wow what a majestic mountain, what a beautiful sea shore and its great waves….OR do we look at a building at say wow what a wonderful building, or a beautiful lamp post or a traffic light….(ok architecture students are an  exception!). When we see God in nature, we are touched by the Father, the Creator of heaven and earth….he made these things for us!
Do we have similar stories to share on how the Holy Spirit or Jesus has touched our lives in the past? Can we take those stories and touch the lives of others today….especially those who we work with, talk with, meet with on a regular basis….Lets try!!!

Raising Godly Children: 16 House Rules by Susannah Wesley

Susannah Wesley was the mother of 19 children, including John and Charles Wesley. Through much adversity, she dedicated her life to instilling a sense of Christian Destiny into each of her children.  Her children went on to change the world.
Here are 16 rules she laid down in her home.

1. Eating between meals not allowed.

2. As children they are to be in bed by 8 p.m.

3. They are required to take medicine without complaining.

4. Subdue self- will in a child, and those working together with God to save the child's soul.

5. To teach a child to pray as soon as he can speak.

6. Require all to be still during Family Worship.

7. Give them nothing that they cry for, and only that when asked for politely.

8. To prevent lying, punish no fault which is first confessed and repented of.

9. Never allow a sinful act to go unpunished.

10. Never punish a child twice for a single offense.

11. Comment and reward good behavior.

12. Any attempt to please, even if poorly performed, should be commended.

13. Preserve property rights, even in smallest matters.

14. Strictly observe all promises.

15. Require no daughter to work before she can read well.

16. Teach children to fear the rod.

ON DISCIPLINE
Susannah Wesley believed that for a child to grow into a self-disciplined adult, he/she must first be a parent-disciplined child. To her, the stubborn flesh was the hardest battle for Christians to fight, and Godly parents would do well to equip their children to overcome it early.

She writes:
When the will of a child is totally subdued, and it is
brought to revere and stand in awe of the parents, then a great many childish follies may be passed by.  I insist on the conquering of the will of children betimes, because this is the only strong and rational foundation of a religious education  when this is thoroughly done, then a child is capable of being governed by reason and piety.
